Wise Multi-Currency Account gives Filipino freelancers something remarkable: real US, European, UK, Australian, and Canadian bank account details you can share with clients, so they pay you as if you were a domestic recipient. Combined with mid-market currency conversion at 0.4-0.6 percent spread, Wise is the cheapest way to receive large international payments in the Philippines in 2026.

This guide walks you through setting up Wise from scratch, understanding what each currency account gives you, and integrating with Payoneer if you already use both. We use both at PIES IT Solutions and have written this from real 3-year experience.
Before you start (prerequisites)
- A valid government ID (passport, driver license, PhilID, UMID)
- Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement, government-issued document showing your PH address)
- A PH bank account for withdrawals (BPI, BDO, UnionBank, Metrobank, Security Bank all work)
- About 30 minutes for signup and KYC
Why Wise beats other options for Filipino freelancers
Wise is different from Payoneer in one crucial way: Wise gives you a REAL bank account number in each currency, not just a virtual receiving address. Your client sends payment to what looks like a domestic account in their country.
The 5 currency accounts included in Wise Multi-Currency:
- USD: ACH routing + account number (US clients pay you as domestic ACH, USD 0 fee)
- EUR: IBAN + BIC (EU clients pay via SEPA, EUR 0 fee)
- GBP: Sort code + account number (UK clients pay via Faster Payments)
- AUD: BSB + account number (Australian clients pay via Osko)
- CAD: Transit + institution + account (Canadian clients pay via Interac)
You can also HOLD currency in these accounts without converting (unlike Payoneer which holds USD only). Useful if you have USD expenses (US SaaS subscriptions, Facebook ads, AWS bills) or if you want to time your PHP conversion for better rates.
Step 1: Sign up at wise.com
- Go to wise.com and click “Register”
- Choose “Personal account” (freelancers use personal; only register business if you have DTI-registered business name)
- Enter email and set a strong password
- Confirm email via link sent to your inbox
- Enter your full name (must match your government ID exactly)
- Enter your PH phone number for SMS verification
Signup takes about 5-10 minutes. Verification (Step 2) takes 1-3 business days after submission.
Step 2: Complete KYC verification
Wise requires identity verification per anti-money-laundering (AML) regulations.
- In your Wise dashboard, click “Verify identity”
- Upload a photo of your government ID (front and back if applicable)
- Take a selfie following the on-screen prompts (live face verification)
- Upload proof of address (utility bill dated within last 3 months, bank statement, or lease agreement)
- Enter your source of income (freelance / self-employed)
- Submit
Wise reviews within 1-3 business days. You get an email when approved. Only then can you request the currency receiving accounts.
Step 3: Request the USD receiving account
Once verified, you unlock the ability to add currency accounts.
- In Wise dashboard, click “Manage” then “Get bank details”
- Select USD
- Accept the terms (Wise partners with Community Federal Savings Bank for USD ACH routing)
- Get your USD account details:
- ACH routing number (9 digits)
- Account number (10-12 digits)
- Account holder name (your name)
- Account type: Checking
- Bank name (Community Federal Savings Bank)
- Bank address (New York, NY)
Also get the SWIFT/Wire details for larger international wires from clients who cannot use ACH. Wise supports both.
Step 4: Add EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD accounts if you have those clients
Repeat Step 3 for each currency. Each takes 2-3 minutes to activate.
Requirements per currency:
- USD: No additional fee. Free forever.
- EUR: Requires proof of EU business relationship OR one-time EUR 21 setup fee to bypass this requirement.
- GBP: Free. Get UK sort code + account number.
- AUD: Free. Get BSB + account number.
- CAD: Free. Get Canadian bank details.
Only activate currencies you actually need. Each activated currency is a real bank account that can be seen by tax authorities in that country if audited. Do not activate speculatively.
Step 5: Give the details to your client
Your client pays you as if you were a domestic recipient in their country.
For US clients: Share your USD ACH routing + account number. They set you up in their accounting system (QuickBooks, Bill.com, Ramp) as a US vendor. Payment arrives in 1-2 business days at zero cost to them.
For UK clients: Share sort code + account number. They pay via Faster Payments (arrives same day) or BACS.
For EU clients: Share IBAN. They pay via SEPA (arrives 1-2 business days, free within EU).
Step 6: Add your PH bank for withdrawal
- Wise dashboard, click “Recipients” then “Add new recipient”
- Choose “Send to yourself” and select PHP as target currency
- Select your bank: BPI, BDO, UnionBank, Metrobank, or Security Bank (all supported with direct feeds in 2026)
- Enter your account holder name (must match Wise account name)
- Enter your PH bank account number
- Verify with small test transfer if Wise requests it
Your PH bank is now saved for one-click withdrawal from any of your Wise currency balances.
Step 7: Convert and withdraw to PHP
- In Wise dashboard, click “Convert money”
- Select source currency (e.g., USD) and target (PHP)
- Enter amount to convert
- Review the conversion: Wise shows the mid-market rate and their fee (typically 0.4-0.6 percent)
- Confirm conversion (funds move from USD balance to PHP balance)
- Click “Send” then select your PH bank recipient
- Confirm withdrawal (arrives in your PH bank in 1-2 business days for BPI/BDO/UnionBank; up to 3-5 days for smaller banks)
Wise also offers “auto-convert” rules where you set a target rate and Wise executes automatically when the market hits your rate. Useful if you want to wait for favorable USD-PHP moves.
Real fee comparison (USD 3,000 invoice example)
| Method | Fees | FX loss | Net PHP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise Multi-Currency | USD 0 receive | ~0.5% (PHP 856) | PHP 170,444 |
| Payoneer | USD 1.50 withdrawal | ~1.65% (PHP 2,825) | PHP 168,390 |
| PayPal | USD 105 (3.49% + 0.49) | ~3.0% (PHP 5,138) | PHP 159,861 (worst) |
| Direct SWIFT wire | USD 30 receive | ~2.5% (PHP 4,281) | PHP 165,999 |
On a USD 3,000 invoice: Wise nets PHP 170,444, Payoneer nets PHP 168,390 (PHP 2,054 less), PayPal loses PHP 10,583 vs Wise. Wise wins meaningfully at USD 3,000+ invoice sizes.
When Wise is BETTER than Payoneer
- Invoice size USD 3,000 or higher (FX spread savings compound at scale)
- You have EU, UK, AU, or CA clients (Payoneer receiving in those currencies is more expensive)
- You want to HOLD USD without converting (for US SaaS subscriptions or ad spend)
- You want the Wise Debit Card (spend USD directly at US merchants without conversion)
When Payoneer is BETTER than Wise
- You use Upwork or Fiverr (Payoneer is the native payout method, no client onboarding needed)
- Invoice size USD 500-2,000 (Wise’s benefits are smaller at these amounts)
- You want a signup bonus (Payoneer USD 25 referral bonus, Wise has no referral bonus in PH)
- Your US client uses Deel or Bill.com and already knows Payoneer
Best practice for active Filipino freelancers: use BOTH. Payoneer for marketplace + small direct clients. Wise for large direct clients and non-US currency work.
Bottom line
Wise Multi-Currency Account is the best tool for Filipino freelancers receiving large international payments (USD 3,000+) or working with EU/UK/AU/CA clients. Setup takes 30 minutes plus 1-3 business days for KYC.
The 5 currency accounts and mid-market conversion save PHP 2,000-5,000 per USD 3,000 invoice compared to Payoneer. At 5 USD 3,000 invoices per month, that is PHP 10,000-25,000/month kept in your pocket.

Frequently asked questions
Is the USD account really a real US bank account?
Yes. Wise partners with Community Federal Savings Bank in New York to issue you a real ACH routing and account number. Your US client cannot tell the account is used by a Filipino freelancer, it looks like any other US business account in their books.
Can I hold USD in Wise indefinitely?
Yes. Unlike Payoneer which pushes you toward withdrawal, Wise lets you hold USD balances indefinitely. Useful for paying US SaaS subscriptions, Facebook ads, AWS bills, or timing PHP conversions for favorable rate moves. You also earn interest on holdings above USD 10,000 in some jurisdictions (not currently PH).
Does Wise offer a debit card?
Yes in most countries. In the Philippines, the Wise debit card is available with a one-time issuance fee (roughly USD 9). It lets you spend directly from any of your currency balances at merchants globally, at the same mid-market rate as Wise transfers. Excellent for US-based SaaS subscriptions or international travel spending.
What is the free receiving limit before Wise starts charging?
USD receiving via ACH is free with no annual limit. USD receiving via SWIFT wire has a small fee. EUR receiving via SEPA is free up to EUR 15,000 per year, then a small fee applies. GBP, AUD, CAD receiving is free with no annual limit. For most Filipino freelancers, all normal receiving is free.
Do I need to declare Wise account to BIR?
Yes, income received via Wise is still Philippine-taxable income. Report gross Wise receipts in PHP (converted at BSP rate on receipt date) on your quarterly Form 1701Q, same as Payoneer. Wise transactions do NOT require separate BIR registration or reporting beyond your standard self-employed 1701Q + 1701 filings.
Can I use Wise for personal remittances from family abroad?
Yes. If your family in US, UK, Canada, or Australia wants to send you money regularly, they can send from their own Wise account (or their bank) to your Wise USD/GBP/CAD/AUD account for near-mid-market conversion rate. Cheaper than Western Union or Remitly for large amounts (PHP 20,000+ equivalent).
