HTML5 Time Element – Beginners Guide for Web Developers – 007

HTML5 Time Element – Beginners Guide.

This tutorial is connected from the previous HTML5 tutorial, the “HTML5 Page Structure“.

In this tutorial, we are going to continue to our blogsite and include the HTML5 time element to our HTML5 document.

Time Element is a new HTML5 element that tells your browser that the content inside an element denotes a time.

You can also use this element in some sort of ways, in our blogsite we are going to use a time format of time element. So, let’s go to our code.

There are kinds of specifying a time element like:

[html5]

<time>2017-05-30</time>

[/html5]

In this example element <time>May 30, 2017</time> how can we get the correct time format of May 30, 2017 To get the correct time format, we are going to use the datetime attribute of the element to indicate or set the actual format of your time.

[html5]

<time datetime=2017-05-30>May 30, 2017</time>.

[/html5]

So regardless on what you have typed inside the time element, the browser will read that typed text in time format May 30, 2017.

Also, the datetime attribute is really helpful in letting the browser know that the time element is on May 30, 2017.

We can also use the UTC format, specific time and specify the time zone.

[html5]

<time datetime=”2017-05-30T19:00+08:00″ pubdate> 3 AM May 30th 2017</time>

[/html5]

Why is this important to your HTML5?

Well, basically it really helps the browser and search engines the specific time and it might be really useful if for this blog post to know the publish date.

As you can see we have an attribute pubdate, pubdate means it gives the exact publish date. That way search engines don’t have to guess the publish date anymore.

On our next tutorial, we will be discussing about HTML5 Figure and FigCaption. Stay tuned webbies!
