How to Save and Fill Data in the Select Box with PHP and MySQL Database.

loaddataSelectboxPHIn this tutorial, I will teach you how to save and fill data in the select box (know as combobox) in PHP and MySQL database. Using this method you can easily save the data and then, it will automatically fill in the select box(combobox).

Let’s begin:

  • Create a database in the MySQL and name it “placedb“.
  • Do the following query for creating table in the database that you have created.
CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `tblplaces` (
 `PLACEID` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
 `PLACE` varchar(90) NOT NULL,
 PRIMARY KEY (`PLACEID`)
) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=1 ;
  • Create a landing page and name it “index.php“.
  • Create a configuration between MySQL database and PHP script.
 <?php
$server = 'localhost';
$dbuser = 'root';
$dbpass = '';
$dbname = 'placesdb';
$con = mysql_connect($server, $dbuser, $dbpass);
if (isset($con)) {
 # code...
 $dbSelect = mysql_select_db($dbname);
 if (!$dbSelect) {
 echo "Problem in selecting database! Please contact administraator";
 die(mysql_error());
 }
} else {
 echo "Problem in database connection! Please contact administraator";
 die(mysql_error());
}
?>
  • Create a button and an input box where you can input data that will be save in the database.
<style type="text/css">
form{
padding: 5px;
width:221px;
background-color:#eee;
}
button {
float: right;
position: inherit;
}
select {
 width: 220px;
 height: 30px;
}
#SELECT{
 margin-top: 30px;
}
</style>
<h1>Add Place</h1>
<form action="" method="POST" >
 <p>Place : <input type="text" name="place"></p>
 <p><button type="submit" name="submit">Submit</button></p>
</form><br/> <br/>
  • Create a method for saving data in the database.
<?php
if(isset($_POST['submit'])){
 /* set a query for inserting records */
 $sqlQuery = "insert into `tblplaces` (`PLACE`)
 VALUES ('".$_POST['place']."')";
 /* execute the query */
 $result = mysql_query($sqlQuery) or die(mysql_error());
 /* checking if the query has successfully executed. */
 if ($result>0) {
 ?>
 <script>
 alert("The data has been save in the database.")
 </script>
 <?php
 }

}
?>
  • Create a select box and a method for fetching data in the database.
<p id="SELECT">
 Select Place:
 <select>
 <option>Select..</option>
 <?php
 $sqlQuery = "SELECT * FROM `tblplaces`";
 $result = mysql_query($sqlQuery) or die(mysql_error());

 while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
 echo "<option>".$row['PLACE']."</option>";
 }
 ?>
 </select>
 </p>
