MySQL setup guide

Purchasing some space on a shared web host is the easiest way to experiment MySQL and PHP. However, you can set up MySQL manually on your personal computer at home. Beginners would find this difficult to do and it requires more than a few lessons! So if you’re ready and you think that you got what it takes, go over to MySQL.com for more information on installing MySQL by yourself.

MySQL Setup in panel

Shared hosting provider has different types of a control panel. Since CPanel is the most popular hosting provider, this tutorial assumes that you are using it.

The first thing that you need to do, finds the link that would allow you to administer MySQL. In this CPanel, the icon is named MySQL Databases. Once you get there, do the following before you can start using MySQL.

  • Create a new database
  • Create a new user with password
  • Assign the user to the database

Helpful tool – phpMyAdmin!

PHPMyAdmin is an open source and free hosting provider that you can install anywhere you want. This allows you to view all the MySQL database, tables, entries, and you can also perform SQL queries through a web browser.

Even though in this tutorial, you will learn how to create databases, tables, and all other MySQL tasks through PHP, we still encourage you to know more about phpMyAdmin. It’s a user-friendly interface because this allows you to do a lot of common MySQL tasks easily and quickly.
